More About Hanan
Welcome to Recover Newport Beach, I’m Hanan! I am so thrilled that you are searching for support with your eating disorder and I’m excited to be a part of your recovery journey. Recovering from an eating disorder is the hardest thing you will ever do, I get that and I want you to know that you are not alone. I became an eating disorder therapist after recovering from my own silent battle with an eating disorder that was slowly taking everything away from me. For years, I lived with hidden traumas that were controlling my life without my conscious knowing. For years, I felt disconnected from myself and my life. I know what it’s like to not like yourself, to go through life as an observer, never feeling quite like you belong. I also know what it’s like to reconnect, realign, gain purpose and perspective, to heal and live a fully embodied life. It is because of my experiences that I have made it my life’s mission to help women and girls like you find their voice and embrace their story, because recovery is worth it.
I started Recover Newport Beach because I believe that in order to fully heal, there needs to be a safe space that fosters compassion and self-love in a community that inspires hope no matter where someone is along their journey. A space where reconnection with the body is reinforced with love and grace and the whole person is considered in the healing process. This is why I felt it is important to incorporate mindful movement and breathing through yoga and dance along with therapy and coaching to approach healing in a more holistic manner. This journey takes patience, grace and trust that this is all a part of your story and that healing your soul will bring along with it wisdom and possibilities that were always there waiting for you to look within. My intention is that Recover Newport Beach is a place that cultivates your inner power, resilience, growth and fosters sisterhood and community so that your recovery feels personal and tangible.
A little about my education and professional background, I am a California licensed eating disorder and trauma therapist and supervisor with extensive experience working with women, girls and their families in various eating disorder treatment and community settings. I graduated from Pepperdine University with a Master’s in Clinical Psychology and trained there as a narrative therapist. I teach Couples and Family Therapy and Social Psychology part-time at Pepperdine University in Irvine, CA.
Considering the role of trauma in the recovery from an eating disorder, I am trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) which is considered the most effective, evidence-based treatment for Trauma and PTSD, and use elements of mindfulness, breathing, somatic experiencing, psychodrama and guided mediations to help my clients reconnect to their body, embrace their story and move forward in their recovery.
Besides my clinical work, I am a mom to three awesome daughters and a furry baby named Harley.
I love being with my family and friends, hosting backyard dinners, beach bon fires and hearing the voices and laughter of the people I love all around me. I enjoy spending time alone, writing, meditating and taking beach walks while geeking out on a podcast or Ted Talk. These are all experiences that I could have never had in my eating disorder because even when I was there, I was not present. I am here to help you and your family navigate your process no matter where you are along your journey. You can do this. You deserve recovery.
